Despite the fact that the simplest classification of fiction divides it into two types - scientific (science fiction) and pure (fantasy), modern cinematic fiction is divided into many additional areas. If you think about it, then Tolkien fantasy, mystical thrillers and even horror films can be safely attributed to cinema fiction. But since our site has a very mediocre relation to cinema, I will tell you about the ten most interesting sci-fi films that have been released over the past few years. Science fiction is still much closer to the subject of our resource, and I think there are a lot of fans of this genre, I think, among our readers.
At once I will make a reservation that within the framework of this material I will talk exclusively about my personal impressions and films that I liked exactly. It is very difficult at times to notice a little-known film that veils somewhere behind bright advertising and expensive marketing of multi-million productions. Also, I will try not to deprive our readers of attention, because girls sometimes also like fantastic stories. For you, beautiful ladies, I also prepared a couple of movies that might interest you. But enough of the opening speeches, it's time to talk about films.
1. The Man from Earth 2007
The incredibly talented work of director Richard Shankman, who managed to make a wonderful science fiction story about university professor John Oldman, who decides to move to another city and collects colleagues and friends for a farewell party for only $ 200,000. In the midst of his conduct, a professor confesses to friends that he is immortal and his age is more than 14,000 years. Due to the fact that he does not age, every 10 years he has to move to a new place of residence in order not to arouse suspicion. Colleagues laugh at John, regarding this recognition as another of his brilliant joke. But the more a professor talks about his life, the harder it is to understand whether he is joking or telling the truth.
The film is really shot for a penny, and the action takes place in one single room - the house of the professor. The entire emphasis of this film is on carefully thought out and verified dialogues. And the dialogues here are just a sight to see! Try to give this film a little of your time, and you will not be disappointed. The script of this ingenious tape was written by one of the original scriptwriters of the cult TV series Star Trek. And this film became popular due to the fact that at one of its few shows in the cinema the pirates recorded the film on camera and distributed the recording on the Net. The director then personally thanked the owners of the pirate site, which contributed to the audience to know about the film.
2. The Time Traveler's Wife 2008
My first recommendation is for our excellent readers. If you still have not seen this movie - you have a great opportunity to relax and have a great evening with a loved one and a wonderful fantastic ribbon about relationships and time travel.
At the center of the story is a man named Henry, who suffers from a rare form of a genetic disease - a movement syndrome over time. From time to time he is thrown for a completely arbitrary period of time, either forward or backward. This feature of his body cannot be controlled at all, therefore, starting from the age of five, Henry tries to get used to his illness and carefully prepares himself for the difficult trials that await him after the next “leap in time”. He masters a number of important skills for survival in a hostile environment, because after moving, he appears in an unfamiliar place completely naked and defenseless. And everything would be fine, but once Henry meets a girl in the library Claire, in which she falls in love, and she, apparently, knows him for many years.
The very kind and fascinating story of these two young people, whose destinies intersect in different times and under different circumstances, may appeal not only to girls, but also to the most callous men who turn up their nose at all this melodramatic nonsense. By the way, this film is an adaptation of the book of the same name by American writer Audrey Niffenegger, for which Brad Pitt purchased the rights to his own. He also acted as the executive producer of this film.
3. The World's End 2013
The final trilogy of "Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy" is a comedy-fiction film directed by Edgar Wright, who presented us with "The Zombie by the name of Sean" and "Like the cool cop". The film will tell you about how five old friends reunite to repeat the feat almost 20 years ago - visit 12 pubs in one evening and drink a pint of excellent beer in each of them. And all would be nothing if it were not for the fact that almost all the inhabitants of their hometown were replaced by robotic clones. I will not tell you what awaits the main characters after this terrifying discovery - it is worth seeing with my own eyes.
The magnificent acting of such famous British stars as Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freeman will by no means leave you indifferent. And the fantastic plot with an unexpected outcome is somehow comparable to the no less ingenious work of Douglas Adams “Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy”. What is worth even the slogan of this film: “Good food. Great beer. Total destruction.
4. District No. 9 (District 9) 2009
If we talk about modern science fiction, then in no case can you ignore the wonderful film Neil Blomkamp "District number 9". This project grew out of his short film “Alive in Joburg”, which impressed the wife of director Peter Jackson so much that she persuaded her husband to produce a full-scale motion picture based on this short video.
The movie is very topical and tells how an alien spacecraft with refugees was forced to make an emergency landing in the Johannesburg region (South Africa). The earthly authorities organized for them a kind of ghetto called “District No. 9”, but over time, when it became clear that no one was planning to fly anywhere, social tension began to grow.
In general, this picture makes many references to the apartheid regime in South Africa and the so-called “sixth district” in the city of Cape Town. But even if we throw away all political views and theories, the plot of this film so absorbs the viewer that it is almost impossible to break away from viewing. The movie turned out, to put it mildly, almost perfect. And the acting game of Charlto Copley, who plays the role of the paper clerk in the cover, is simply beyond praise. If you have avoided this masterpiece so far, now is the time to catch up.

And again the British fantastic comedy about time travel. The British generally succeed well in films and series of similar subjects, remember at least the cult TV series Doctor Who.

6. Prometheus (Prometheus) 2012
Many have been waiting for this film as a prequel of the legendary fantastic horror “Alien”, but in no case can it be considered in this way. With "Alien" it has in common except some similarity of scenery and a couple of references for avid fans. Nevertheless, if Ridley Scott's Prometheus is considered as an independent film, this is a very interesting fantastic spectacle and a real eye candy, as many frames from the film can be printed and hung in a frame on the wall without hesitation. Oh, the artists of this picture have tried their best. So, if not out of nostalgic considerations, then for the sake of new bright impressions this film must be watched.
In 2093, a research expedition is sent from Earth to a distant planetoid LV-223. Scientists hope to find there confirmation of the extraterrestrial origin of life on planet Earth, as in the caves of the Scottish Isle of Skye were found drawings depicting people and tall humanoid creatures, indicating a certain constellation. Of course, on arrival at the planetoid, everything goes completely differently as planned, and the whole expedition is in mortal danger. But it’s like that in the fantastic horror of Ridley Scott.
I would venture to suggest that 99% of our readers have already managed to see this picture, like some of the other films listed here. But I would like to believe that there will be a person who will be encouraged to read this material to sit down and watch this film thoughtfully for the first time.
7. Chronicle (Chronicle) 2012
For the director Joshua Trunk, this film was the debut in the big cinema, and the debut was very successful, because now he has to remove the restart of the Fantastic Four and the full-length spin-off of the Spider-Man franchise dedicated to Venom.
The film is made in the fashionable technology now "mokyument". Yes, these are the same films when they shoot everything from shaking hands on an amateur camera or cell phone, and then show it all on the big screen and try to pass it off for documentary footage of real events. In defense of this genre, I have to say that the film was shot at an amazingly high quality level, and you get used to the amateur style of shooting rather quickly. But the realism of what is happening on the screen is greatly enhanced, so you can sacrifice principles and dare to watch.
Three friends find a hole in the ground from a meteorite. Descending into a kind of cave, they thereby change their lives forever. All of them acquire telekinetic superpowers, which are unlikely to benefit the guys, because any power, first of all, corrupts a person. Friends do not begin to fight crime or change the world for the better, as it usually happens with comic book characters. They are having fun, coming off, testing the world for strength, making cruel jokes over people and even starting to gradually break the laws. In each of them, the dark sides of their character that are asleep awake, and all this should be expected to lead to a dramatic denouement.
8. Never Let Me Go 2010
Another my recommendation for our beautiful ladies. Fantastic and very sensual melodrama, which is the adaptation of the novel of the same name by the Japanese writer Kazuo Ishiguro. The plot focuses on a dystopian UK of the late 20th century, in which people are cloned for the sake of growing donor organs for transplantation.
The main characters of the film are the same organ incubators who live in a special boarding school, where they are protected in every way, trained in various arts and regularly subjected to thorough medical examinations. Pupils of the boarding school do not know about their further fate, and only after reaching the age of majority, when they leave the boarding school, does the terrible truth come to them. The organs of them will be withdrawn one by one until life leaves their body.
On the one hand, a terrible story looks pretty fresh and interesting. In many ways, we must say a special thank you to talented actors Andrew Garfield (new Spider-Man) and Carey Mulligan, who in the film really shone in their images of clones in love. In general, it is recommended to look at this slow and melancholic picture only when nothing can ruin your mood.
9. Europe (Europa Report) 2012
Another low-cost science fiction film, which film critics have bypassed, but in vain. The story is very realistic and may well be of interest to space lovers and the exploration of other planets.
The film tells about the international space expedition to the sixth satellite of Jupiter - Europe. The goal of this expedition, which is sponsored by some private corporation, is to land on the surface of the satellite and search for all forms of life. Indeed, under a thick layer of ice covering Europe, presumably there is a water ocean in which microorganisms can exist.
Impressive cast of the picture. Here you can see Charlto Copley from District No. 9, Michaela Nykvist from the Swedish Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Christian Camargo from the TV series Dexter, and even Caroline Vidru, remembered to me by the role of Dr. House's girlfriend. In other words, each actor plays very expressively and I had no doubts about their talents while watching.
If you do not shy away from inexpensive special effects, and the fascination and realism of the plot for you in the first place - do not bypass this film side. Moreover, it is one of the best science fiction films about space in recent years, along with Gravity, by Alfonso Cuaron.
10. Black Mirror 2011 - Present
I'm a little away from the subject of feature films, because I just can not tell you about this wonderful British television series. The Black Mirror is amazing stories about our present and near future, where the global problems of humanity, high technology, morality and emotions of people intertwine. Each episode of this series is a separate independent story. You can watch the series in general in any sequence to your taste, in this respect its creators do not impose any restrictions on you.
The realism of some of the “technologies of the future” painfully resembles developed ideas from our present. In one of the series we are told that in their everyday life people should watch ads day and night without a break. Their apartments are literally built from giant advertising displays, and they won't be able to cover them up either, in which case an ultrasonic siren will turn on, gradually driving the person to mind. If you do not want to watch ads - pay for refusal from it, after which you can relax a bit. In another series, we are told the story of a married couple, who, due to the fact that all human memories are now stored on special implants built into the brain, learn about each other not the most pleasant things. In the third series, we are witnessing the fact that with the help of YouTube service you can subdue and bring the whole country’s government to its knees.
Each story of the “Black Mirror” is frightened by the fact that everything seen in it has a chance to appear in our lives in the foreseeable future. This really makes you feel a little uneasy. But to break away from such a spectacle is also extremely difficult, it magically keeps you at the screen.
At the moment, there are only 2 seasons of this series, and since the series is British, there are only 3 separate series in each season. But, apparently, very soon the third season will come out on screens with new nightmarish visions of the human future, which inevitably becomes closer to us every day.
