While the eastern part of Canada is experiencing one of the worst ice storms in history (a total of 350,000 houses have been de-energized and 5 people have died), the idea of making an ice machine might seem like an evil ironic joke. However, Canadian companies Canadian Tire and Iceculture had invented and built a real, fully functioning truck out of this frozen liquid before the storm began.

It should be noted that along with the “Lego-car”, this ice-cream SUV occupies the top line of the list of the most unique vehicles created in 2013. The ice truck is built on the basis of a 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD pickup truck that has gone through a very long and laborious transformation process with the help of engineers from Bronson Line Automotive Ltd, Pick Me Productions and Iceculture designers.

The total mass of an ice pickup truck is 6803 kilograms, of which 4989 kilograms fall on ice. And believe me, the guys have made tremendous efforts to ensure that this monster from the frozen water was visually most similar to its original model. In Texas, where the car came from, Bronson Automotive completely disassembled it, removing the cab and body, then lowered the clearance and expanded the engine compartment. Then the car was sent to Ontario, where a team of engineers at Pick Me Productions developed and welded a special steel structure to the base to install ice blocks. After that, Iceculture had to cut ice blocks three times to install them as a hull and then shoot the car for promotional purposes.

In order to avoid sharp melting of ice blocks in front of the car, where the engine is located, the creators considered several options for how heat will be removed from the ice components. It was decided that the installation of special additional fans, which would allow to dissipate heat and help preserve the integrity of the frozen structure, would be the best way out. All parts for this task were made by hand.

In the end, it turned out that in order to conduct an advertising campaign for the Canadian Tire company, the creators had to assemble several ice bodies. One truck was used as a prototype, the second one was shown to Canadian Tire partners, and the third working model was shown to customers.

After shooting an advertisement, the working model of the pickup truck was dismantled again and sent to the Iceculture studio located in Ontario. The team had only 24 hours to do this, some of which they spent on a 1.6-kilometer test ride and at the same time make an attempt to open a new category of records in the Guinness Book of Records. After that, the truck was taken back to the store and left for defrosting, which lasted more than 40 hours.

An advertising video with an ice car will be shown during the broadcast of the Canadian Hockey League NHL Hockey Classic. In the meantime, you have the opportunity to look at the process of melting the ice pickup.
