Designer Benjamin Rollins Caldwell fulfilled his long-cherished dream and developed a whole line of furniture, during the creation of which he used only broken components of computer equipment and electronic household appliances.
A native of South Carolina, Benjamin received two degrees in arts and business at Westmont College in California. Returning to his native state, the artist got a job at the company Votivo, which was engaged in the production of designer aroma candles and candlesticks. In 2009, he left this company and a year later founded his own furniture manufacturing workshop - BRC Designs.
The artist himself speaks of his work not only as a "reinvention" of something very familiar to us. He draws inspiration from old things from antique shops, visits various sales, searches for abandoned warehouses, and even goes to garbage dumps, where one can often find some unique materials for his work.
As a result of all these efforts, Benjamin creates a whole line of furniture, which consists of playing cards, old pianos, discarded books, bicycles, children's toys and other completely inapplicable furniture, items. In his work, he also uses more familiar materials such as wood, metal, glass, plastic and stone.
“Sometimes I stumble upon an object that inspires me to the concept of a completely new design, and it also happens that this object becomes just a building material in the process of creating something new,” says the artist.
The new line of furniture, which is called "Binary", is entirely made of electronic parts and computer cases, as well as various consumer electronics. Despite the fact that such furniture is unlikely to fit into any interior, and it does not carry much practical use in itself, the work of the artist looks truly impressive. Take at least a chair, one of the parts of which is completely woven from the smallest wires, or a mat woven from data cables. The artist asks for a lot of money for his work: the “Binary Chair” alone costs about 14 thousand dollars.
Each piece of furniture in this series is more like a carefully constructed piece of modern art than a jumble of rubbish, as it may seem at first. And who knows, maybe some celebrity will one day acquire something from the work of this designer. Lady Gaga, for example, already looks great in this interior.
