We continue our conversation about creating special effects for modern blockbusters. Today we will talk about the wonderful science fiction film “Guardians of the Galaxy”, or to be precise, about creating the character of the rocket raccoon, loved by many viewers. Let me remind you that Rocket, never parting with his faithful partner Grute, is an expert in military tactics, an excellent shooter and has an explosive temper that fits his name perfectly. Shooting scenes with Rocket were not easy, and they were filmed in several visits. Initially, a statist with a toy raccoon (in some cases a small actor played a raccoon) appeared in the draft scene, so that the operator at least partially imagined where one of the key characters of the future film would be. Then, a team of animators, based on these frames, sketched out the general movements of the Rocket and visualized them using a simplified three-dimensional model. After that, the scene was re-shot with the participation of live actors, who were not supposed to intersect with the trajectories of motion of animated characters.

After that, all the same animators set about developing more detailed computer characters. In parallel with this, work is being done with light, reflections, smoke and other special effects, without which the picture on the screen will look unrealistic. An important role is played by color correction, due to which each element is carefully processed so that it harmoniously fits into the frame.

To make the raccoon look as realistic as possible, animators carefully scanned and captured the movements of a real raccoon named Oreo, who was present at the site for most of the shooting and inspired the filmmakers with their inexhaustible optimism.
